Depth of the Ocean

In the first of the series, orphaned Aleja wants to dive to the bottom of the ocean in preparation for settling the ocean floor—in part to say she can, and the other part to prove as a Puerto Rican that colonization can happen on Earth without displacing people.

But there’s a problem, Alejandrina Sinclaire is an awkward child prodigy grown up, and her guardian, Abuela, demands that she find a dive partner for her expedition. 

In walks Cesar Correa. He’s young, handsome, and available for more than just the expedition. But the problem is, his father, Carlitos, is a government operative. As plans go awry, Aleja isn’t entirely convinced that Carlitos is the only problem in the way. The farther she dives, the more she wonders if there is something behind La Isla del Encanto’s fantastical stories.
